Injectable fillers are a popular cosmetic treatment that can help improve the appearance of many facial features. The most common injectable fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the body. Different formulations are approved to either volumize:

  • Cheeks
  • smooth facial wrinkles and folds
  •  smooth lines around the mouth
  • plump the lips

The results are subtle and long lasting, making injectable fillers an attractive option for men and women who want a more youthful appearance. Treatment is typically quick and easy, with minimal discomfort. And because no surgery is involved, there is no need for downtime or recovery. If you are considering injectable fillers, consult a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to learn more about the different types of fillers available and which one may be right for you.

Juvederm FAQS

Juvederm is the ideal treatment for restoring facial contours and improving signs of aging. It’s an injectable dermal filler with a base in hyaluronic acid that focuses on your face, specifically around cheekbones as well as lips to give them more volume than before!

Fillers can last a variety of durations depending on the specific type, but usually they are safe for up to 2 years with more robust fillers like Voluma. While Juvederm Ultra typically only lasts 1 year before needing another treatment or procedure done again.

The Juvederm family of injectables has been a long-standing top choice for dermal fillers, allowing many patients to experience more confidence through youthful appearances. With use on wrinkles and folds in addition to lips enhancement , it’s no wonder why this product is so popular!

If you’re looking to combat signs of aging, your mid-20s is often a good time. Your body starts losing bone and collagen around age 26 so it’s an excellent opportunity for maintenance injections that will require less product as compared with waiting until later in life when more damage has already been done!

These products should not be used in patients who have severe allergies, marked by a history of anaphylaxis or history or presence of multiple severe allergies, and should not be used in patients with a history of allergies to Gram-positive bacterial proteins or lidocaine contained in these products.

The following are important treatment considerations for you to discuss with your doctor and understand in order to help avoid unsatisfactory results and complications.

  • Minimize strenuous exercise and exposure to extensive sun or heat within the first 24 hours following treatment. Exposure to any of these may cause temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection site.
  • Tell your doctor if you are using any medication that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or other blood thinners. As with any injection, this may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site.
  • Tell your doctor if you are planning laser treatment, chemical peeling or any other procedure after treatment with JUVEDERM®. There is a possible risk of an inflammatory reaction at the treatment site.
  • Tell your doctor if you are on therapy used to decrease the body’s immune response. Use may result in an increased risk of infection.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The safety for use during pregnancy, in breastfeeding females, or in patients under 18 years has not been studied.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of excessive scarring (thick, hard scars). The safety of JUVEDERM® injectable gel in patients with a history of excessive scarring has not been studied and may result in additional scars.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of pigmentation disorders. The safety of JUVEDERM® in patients with a history of pigmentation disorders has not been studied. Use in these patients may result in changes in pigmentation.
  • DO NOT consume alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising)
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood-thinning medications, if possible, for a period of 2 weeks before treatment. Medications and supplements such as aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo Biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and other NSAIDS have a blood-thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections.
  • Schedule your Juvederm appointment at least two weeks prior to a special event you may be attending, such as a wedding or a vacation. Bruising and swelling may be apparent in that time period.
  • Discontinue Retin-A 2 days before and two days after treatment. Reschedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance if you have a rash, cold sore, or blemish on the area.
  • Be sure to have a good breakfast, including food and drink, before your procedure. This will decrease the chances of lightheadedness during your treatment.
  • You are not a candidate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Avoid significant movement or massage of the treated area. Unless instructed by the provider.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Avoid extensive sun or heat for 72 hours.
  • Avoid consuming excess amounts of alcohol or salts to avoid excess swelling.
  • If you have swelling, you may apply a cool compress for 15 minutes each hour.
  • Use Tylenol for discomfort.
  • Try to sleep face up and slightly elevated if you experience swelling.
  • Take Arnica to help the bruising and swelling; start at least two days prior to injections.
